It’s the first {OFFICIAL} day of fall and here we are faced with the never failing hair question - should we color our hair dark for fall? We’ve asked the experts (our amazing team of stylists) and here’s what we can tell you about the fall hair itch we are all currently dying to scratch.
Why do we always get that feeling of going darker with our hair in the cooler months?
It seems to go with the territory. With change all around, why not switch up your hair too? In the summer we have an extra warm glow to our skin and brighter/lighter hair helps add to it. So when fall comes in the Midwest and we all start lacking our vitamin D and sunshine, having some extra color in our hair helps add some warmth to our lacking skin tones. And let’s be honest, when we can’t change the weather, at least we can change our hair color for a little pick me up!
But, do you have to go darker in the fall?
No way! There is no law that says you have to, but if you are feeling washed out from summer lightened hair and pale skin, then going a little darker is a great option! And it doesn’t have to be drastic! If you really have the desire - go for a big change! Just keep in mind summer will be around the corner before you know it and you might have the craving to be light again! Anything more than 2 shades darker than your current shade may take a lot of work (and some serious ca$h) to get back to your summer brightness so keep that in mind. When in doubt, talk to your stylist! Check with them that this transformation is a) okay for your hair and b) not going to be permanent if you don’t want it to be.
How can you easily go darker in the cooler months without making it hard to go back lighter in the summer?
1. Adding some depth back into your base (the root area) is an easy way to add dimension and contrast back to summer washed out hair. We love keeping the ends light and blending the darker to lighter with a medium lowlight. Come summer time we can let the darker base fade and soften out then add extra highlighting back to get you back where you started.
We love this look because it almost makes the existing blonde look brighter but adds definition and warmth back to your face.
2. Another great option that only Davines Hair Color can offer is to ‘gloss’ the hair with our Finest Pigments. This is a deposit only color that is 99% naturally derived. It not only adds amazing shine to the hair, but we can add some tone to it while deep conditioning dry winter hair all in one step. It gives beautiful shine, luster, and bounce back to the hair! The glossing option gives a transparent coverage to the hair (like a sheer fabric) instead of an opaque coverage (like a thick blanket) so it still allows some soft highlights to peak through.
3. Go for it! When you need a pick-me-up, JUST DO IT! Here are a few beautiful transformations for those with the “fall” itch! Whether you're thinking about going super dark, considering balancing out your base shade, OR looking for something totally different (hello red hair, we love you) switching your look up can be so much fun!
Do we need to use any special products if we choose to go dark?
Lighter or previously lightened hair (either from your stylist highlighting it or the sun) is generally porous (has holes in the hair shaft that natural hair does not have). So when your stylist puts a new (darker) color on, you will experience fading often times due to the new color being able to easily escape through the holes in your porous hair.
Minu Shampoo and Conditioner is our go-to for illuminating and protecting colored hair. Its light and adds the extra protection needed to lock in the color and prevent fading as much as possible.
The Menu Hair Serum is also a great product for those who have transitioned to dark hair! It is a leave in serum that helps to intensify and protect your color. And it adds MAJOR shine for an added bonus.
We also love the Nou Nou Shampoo and Conditioner because of its protein providing properties that help keep the hair strong and holding color.
If you are looking for a quick conditioning treatment to add shine to your colored mane then go for the Spotlight Mask. Trust us, your hair will never look better.
And of course we ALWAYS recommend the Oi All in One Milk. This wonder product is an all-in-one… meaning it detangles, deep conditions, moisturizes, adds shine, and is heat protecting! WOW! Obviously it’s a must have for pretty much everyone!
Any tips for those going for it and transitioning to darker hair?
Try washing your hair less. The hot water and agitation of washing can often lead to color fade. Try going 1 or 2 days between washes to prolong your color even longer.
So are you ready for a change!!??
Just do it!
