#1 WASH YOUR HAIR TWICE

We know what you’re thinking - HOW does this cost me nothing when I am using more shampoo? And while you are correct in theory, washing your hair twice when you wash get’s your hair cleaner and will allow you to go longer between washes. But why wash twice? For starters it allows you to get your hair and scalp really REALLY clean. This is crucial for creating a great looking style and for helping your style last even longer. Clean hair also looks more vivid and shiny. A win win win!

#2 BLOWDRY YOUR HAIR

There are a lot of great benefits to blow-drying. First, it allows you to create volume and a smoother overall look. It also helps your hair remain oil free longer. When you blow dry your hair you are opening up the cuticle versus when you air dry and let your hair lay limp and flat. This limp hair is great for collecting oils. Additionally letting your hair air dry can leave your hair and scalp wet for extended periods of time. This can be a breading ground for bacteria and even mold (NO THANK YOU).

#3 EXFOLIATE YOUR FACE WEEKLY

Exfoliating is ESSENTIAL to a great skincare routine. 5 Tips to Help you LOVE the way your Makeup Looks

Let’s talk makeup! More importantly, complexion makeup! Your foundation, concealer, setting powder, bronzer, and even primer make up a HUGE part of your makeup routine but are often forgotten about. These face makeup products can often be a huge part of the reason you don’t love the way your makeup looks. Whether it's using the wrong product, not using enough of a product, or not using the product at all- there is a fix to your dilemma.  

Here are 5 of our BIGGEST Tips to help you LOVE the way your makeup looks!

USE A MAKEUP PRIMER

Primer is literally a MUST HAVE for anyone who is wearing foundation. You need to be using a primer before your foundation for 2 reasons. Firstly, it blurs out any fine lines or enlarged pores leaving you with a great base to apply foundation. Second, it keeps your foundation on throughout the day. Think of this miracle product like glue. It keeps your foundation stuck in place all day long. 

 One of the main complaints we hear about makeup is that it wears off by mid-day, or "looks crummy by lunch", our first question is- Are you wearing a primer? If the answer is no (which 9 out of 10 times it is) then we have solved the problem. If your makeup isn't lasting, or is looking bad by the middle of the day, then primer is your answer! It will keep your makeup on and looking its best all day long.

Now that we know we need a primer, the next question is, which primer do you need? There are different kinds of primer for different needs. At Pure, we carry 2 different primers (and both are amazing)!

First, we have the Mineral Primer- this product is an oldie and a goodie. It is the original primer created by Youngblood cosmetics and is hydrating and smoothing! This primer blurs out fine lines and pores allowing you to get that flawless finish. But, keep in mind it is hydrating! It adds extra moisture to the skin and is great for those with normal to dry skin.

Next, we have the CC Primer. This tinted primer is a newer addition to the Youngblood collection and is one of our overall product FAVORITES. It comes in two shades- bare and tan. Not only does this primer smooth and perfect, it also evens out the skin tone. That's right y'all, this bad boy can help with skin discoloration. We also love that this primer is mattifying- but in a soft way. That means it is GREAT for those with normal to oily skin!

USE THE RIGHT FOUNDATION

All foundations do the same thing, why does it matter what kind I use? WRONGGGGG. Foundations are not created equal and it seriously does matter what foundation type, and foundation shade, you are using. Your foundation is so important to the overall look of your makeup. 

When it comes to wearing the right shade, the simple truth is, many people aren't. Our skin naturally changes shades throughout the seasons (whether we are laying out in the sun or not). Often times people forget to transition their foundation shades to their lighter or darker shade based on the season. The issue is this leaves your face looking a totally different shade then your body (YIKES). This can contribute to the feeling of dislike towards the look of your makeup. Here is an example of someone not switching to their winter shade. On the left Hope is wearing her summer shade and on the right she has on her winter shade.

 And it's not just the shade you are wearing that matters. The way your makeup looks can also be impacted by the type of foundation you are wearing. Foundation comes in a few forms. These include liquid, loose powder, pressed powder, and cream. With so many options it can be tough to know which one is actually best for you.  

 At Pure we use all Youngblood Cosmetics. This line has really focused on (and perfected) both liquid and powder foundation. We love the way these products wear, and look, on the skin. It’s light, breathable, but also gives a great full coverage. When choosing between the liquid and powder options there are a few things to keep in mind. 

 

Liquid Foundation is great for those with dry skin! It adds moisture to the skin and keeps it from drying out further. We recommend liquid foundation throughout the colder months- as the weather can be super drying for the skin. It gives a fuller coverage to the skin, and can cover up most imperfections.

In contrast, Powder Foundation is great for those with naturally oily skin. Because it is a powder, it naturally helps to control oil, but still leaves the skin with a soft & radiant glow. We love that powder foundation has a buildable coverage. That means it can start off pretty sheer but can be built up to a seriously full coverage. 

 

*** Sometimes one just isn't enough! We love to mix the liquid and powder foundations when we want a full coverage flawless look.  

 In the end it's all about finding the foundation that works the best for your skin type. Whether it's liquid, powder, or a combination of them both. Finding the perfect match for you can make a world of difference in the way your makeup looks and wears on your face. 

 USE THE RIGHT UTENSILS

 When it comes to makeup essentials- many of us think of products and forget all about the utensils. If your goal is to have flawless looking makeup that lasts, then you need to pay attention to the makeup brushes you are using. Using the right brush can help with the coverage of your foundation, and the blend of your makeup.

We recommend using a brush with short compact bristles when applying your foundation. This will help you to create a full coverage makeup look that will last longer throughout the day. Using a larger fluffy brush to apply your foundation will leave you with a super light coverage that virtually disappears by mid day (No thanks). 

 

Additionally, using a beauty blender- instead of a brush or your fingers- can really help to make your concealer or liquid foundation blend. When using a beauty blender, make sure to get the sponge damp with water before using. This helps the sponge blend in the product evenly. If you are using the blender with your liquid foundation keeping it damp will help the foundation to look more like skin, and can work wonders on areas of your skin that are dry. 

 USE A CONCEALER

Concealer is for everyone! We like to think of it as a non-negotiable when it comes to all makeup routines. Whether you're 21 or 81, this bad boy is for you! Concealer can be used to cover up blemishes and dark spots, and can also help to illuminate your eyes. Keep in mind that using a beauty blender to work the concealer into the skin is the best way to get long lasting results.

 When applying the concealer use your concealer brush to apply the concealer under your eyes in a large upside down triangle. Doing this helps to give the illusion of a de-puffed eye area, and it also takes away any discoloration. Then, use your beauty blender to press the concealer into the skin and leave it looking well blended. To finish, set the concealer with a pressed setting powder, to ensure a long lasting result without creasing. 

PERFECT YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE 

And sometimes, the issue has nothing to do with your makeup at all. Great skin is the best thing to have to create a makeup look you love. If your makeup is continually looking chunky or making you look super oily, switching up your skincare routine can work wonders.  

We recommend regularly using a facial scrub (about 2-3 times a week) to take off any dead skin that can cause breakouts or imperfections in your makeup. We also recommend using a great moisturizer that helps your skin to be it's best.

6 Tips to go LONGER Between Hair Washes

Let's be honest, going through the process of washing and drying your hair can be quite a pain. Between wash, dry, and style time you are looking at a 1 hour commitment (no thanks)! Of course we all know those people, the ones who go a whole week without washing their hair and still look fabulous. It's hard not to envy, or even hate them (in the nicest way possible) for their ability to bypass the washing process. Especially when you know that if you went a week without washing you'd look something like a greasy mop. It's just not fair! 

Luckily we are here to give a helping hand! Yes of course some people just live a blessed life and it is easier for them to go days between washes. That doesn't mean it’s impossible for you to do the same! There are a few changes you can make to your routine to help your hair last longer between washes! 

 ALWAYS BLOWDRY YOUR HAIR

Yes, of course we know blow drying is a PAIN. You get hot in places you didn't even know you could get hot and you get hair in places you didn't even know you could get hair. But, blowdrying your hair is HUGE not only for combatting grease, but also for styling and hair health! 

When you blow dry your hair you are actually fluffing out the hair cuticle, this gives your hair that volume and bounce that you love! It also helps your hair to repel the oil that sleek "non-blowdryed" hair collects. Drying your hair also helps your styling products hold better, which keeps your curls in place! 

 Touch your hair less

One of the most important- yet most challenging changes to make- is touching your hair less. Your hands are oil magnets and when you continually touch your hair you are transferring those oils to your hair! Work on keeping your hands off of your hair. Try using a brush or comb rather than your fingers to adjust your hair style. Obviously we know it's impossible to NEVER touch your hair. The goal is to teach yourself to touch it far less, this will help to keep your hair fresher longer.

USe dry shampoo correctly 

 Dry shampoo is an important part of your routine when going longer between washes. Although many people rely heavily on dry shampoo, some common mistakes are made!

You will want to shake the can of dry shampoo before application. This keeps it from coming out thick and frosting your hair with a white chalk like look. Also, DON'T apply the product too close to the hair, this will also give you that chalky look! We also recommend letting the dry shampoo sit awhile before you brush through it. When you immediately brush through the product it isn’t getting a chance to do its job and soak up that oil. Finally, make sure you are directing the dry shampoo at your oily areas. Section apart your hair and spray it directly on your oily spots.

 Follow these practices and your dry shampoo should do the trick and kick that unwanted oil to the curb! We recommend using the Davines Hair Refresher because it is light and refreshing and doesn't get gunk on your scalp like other products! We also LOVE the smell! 

Train your mane 

This is HUGE! It's pretty impossible to just wake up one day and decide to go an entire week between hair washes (unless you are one of those lucky and gifted individuals). Your body naturally produces oils accustomed to its need so if you are a regular and habitual hair washer, your body produces extra oils to replenish those stripped away in your washes. That is why your hair gets extra oily in just one day. But, just because you have been an everyday washer doesn't mean you have to remain one! 

 The goal is to GRADUALLY train your hair to go days between washes. Don't simply jump from washing daily to once a week. Instead spend a month or so washing your hair every other day. At first you will notice your hair getting really oily on your non-wash day but as time goes on this will slow. Soon you will feel comfortable simply washing every other day and will then be able to move on to every third day. Remember that this is a process and that it will not happen over night! 

 Use the right Products

The products you use in your hair can make a world of difference! You want your hair to look like it is fresh and clean everyday even if its been 3 days since your last hair wash! Try these awesome products when trying to last longer between washes!

HOW TO USE : spray throughout towel dried hair before you blow dry. Goes on the hair mids to ends.

HOW TO USE: when the hair is wet put 1 to 3 pumps into your hands and run it through your hair mids to ends then blowdry. when the hair is dry use 1 to 2 pumps throughout your hair mids to ends to smooth out frizz and add shine back to the hair.

HOW TO USE: shake the can well and spray onto oily areas of your hair when it is dry.

HOW TO USE: apply directly to the scalp and work in. Let the shampoo sit for a few moments before rinsing. You will feel a slight scalp tingle as it works.

Wash correctly

Keep in mind that if you are going longer between washes it is important to make your wash days count! When your hair is dirtier it can take a bit more effort to get it really clean! Try shampooing TWICE to get rid of any extra grease and oil! Just like when you wash your face, first you wash it to remove the makeup then you wash it to deep clean your face. This double washing will help your hair last longer until the next wash!

Beauty Spring Cleaning

 Here are our must-do’s when it comes to spring beauty cleaning…

DEEP CLEAN YOUR SCALP

Let’s be real, everyone’s scalp could us a clean-up. Whether you have an oily scalp, dry scalp, experience product build-up, or just want a refresh - adding a scalp deep clean into the mix can do wonders for your hair and scalp! We recommend using the Solu Sea Salt Cleanser to remove any imperfections and get that super clean feeling. It’s a scrub shampoo with sea salt that has a gritty texture to it. This product refreshes the scalp and removes impurities, product residues, and imperfections large and small. It gives texture to the hair and keeps it clean and light. This deep cleanse can be done here at the salon, or at home.

To Use: Apply a quarter size finger full of product to your damp hair. Gently massage the scrub paste into the scalp. As you massage you should begin to feel a foam like texture – add more water as needed. Rinse thoroughly and then apply your conditioner! This product can be used every 3 shampoo’s (do not use every time you shampoo).

CLEAN YOUR MAKEUP BRUSHES

This one is always on our to – do list. Yet somehow, we never get to it. So now is our chance! It’s time to clean those makeup brushes. We’ve all heard it time and time again but the message still rings true. Washing your makeup brushes is IMPORTANT. 

And here’s why…

· Dirty brushes can cause breakouts because they are a breading ground for bacteria and a storage unit for dirt and oils

· Brush will preform better when clean

· Washing your brushes softens the bristles helping them to be less agitating for the skin

· Brushes will last longer if cleaned regularly

It’s a pain, we totally get it, but it is worth it. Give your brushes a clean now, and tryyyyy to keep up the routine once a month at least. We can do it ladies!!!

HOW TO WASH YOUR BRUSHES…

Step One - Grab any / all of your makeup brushes and beauty blenders

Step Two - Grab your soap. We LOVE using DEDE SHAMPOO to clean our brushes because it is a delicate daily shampoo. If you don’t have DEDE Shampoo that’s okay! Try using any gentle shampoo (like a baby shampoo) that isn’t moisturizing. Using moisturizing products can change the quality of your brushes bristles.

Step Three - Wet the brush and put a nickel size of soap on your finger tips. Then gently move the brush in circles working the soap and water into the bristles.

Step Four - Continue this cleaning process until the water runs clear from the brush and all the makeup is removed.

Step Five - Lay the brush down neatly on a towel with the bristles flattened into a natural position. Let the brush completely dry out before using / placing in a standing position.

CLEAN OUT YOUR BEAUTY PRODUCTS

When is the last time you went through your beauty products? We’re talking makeup, skincare, haircare, and body care. Can’t remember? Us either! And that is no good! 

Beauty products can expire just like the food in your fridge, but most of us keep them far past their “good through” date. Now is the perfect time to go through your collection. Our rule of thumb, for opened products, if you can’t remember when you purchased that item, or you can, and it’s been more than a year – its got to go! For un-opened products, anything over two years old must go.

We know what your thinking, “But I only used it once and I might want to try it again soon”. And while we hear you (and totally feel you) it’s just not good. During that amount of time a few things can happen. First, these products can loose their ability to work correctly. Hairspray just isn’t made to sit on your shelf for 2 years. Second, bacteria can begin to grow in these products making them unhealthy for you to use. 

DEEP CLEAN AND TREAT YOUR SKIN

Start with a deep clean. Sure we wash our face regularly but there are some things that your everyday washing just doesn’t get. For that, we recommend the Essential Peeling.
